WA PREP supports school districts and youth serving organizations in selecting comprehensive sexual health education (CSHE) curricula that best meets the needs of their youth and the community.
WA PREP can assist school districts in selecting a CSHE curriculum from the OSPI reviewed list that meets the state standards and legislative requirements. Support also includes facilitating a curriculum adoption task force, presenting recommendations to School Boards, and training teachers on the selected curriculum. As mandated in WA state, each curriculum will include:
- Information on abstinence and contraception to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Healthy relationships, such as positive self-esteem, relationship dynamics, friendships, dating, romantic involvement, and family interactions
- Caregiver-child communication
- Healthy life skills, such as goal setting, social-emotional learning, decision making, negotiation, communication, interpersonal skills and stress management
- Adolescent development, such as anatomy and physiology, puberty, and reproduction
- Affirmative consent and bystander intervention
Youth serving organizations are welcome to select curricula from the OSPI list, or WA PREP can assist in reviewing other CSHE curricula that suit community needs.
